Until recently, drivers were rewarded for buying low-emissions cars by having their road tax waived or greatly reduced. In 2017, however, this law was changed; now everyone buying a car on the new marker pays a fixed amount, regardless of how eco-friendly the car they opt for. If you buy a new petrol or diesel car, you'll pay £140 per year, or £130 for a hybrid model - only fully electric cars and the hydrogen-powered Toyota Mirai are exempt.
Fortunately, there's a way around this: buy a used car. If the vehicle you choose was registered between March 2001 and March 31, 2017, and has CO2 emissions of 100g/km or less, you'll pay no road tax. Below 110g/km you'll pay £20 a year, and below 120g/km you'll pay £30 a year.
Here at Carwise Group, we have a wide range of low-tax cars on offer. Many of the models we sell are registered before 31 March 2017, meaning you can take advantage of the previous laws. Among those we have available are the used Hyundai i10, which is compact and efficient, being around £30 a year to tax and returning up to 70.6mpg.
We also have the popular used Vauxhall Astra for sale. Stylish, sophisticated and great to drive, the Astra is an economical family option. The 1.0-litre three-cylinder petrol engine returns 65.7mpg and should be tax exempt, as should the 1.6-litre 108bhp and 134bhp diesels – check the specification to make sure chunky alloy wheels haven't tipped emissions over the threshold though.
Other low tax vehicles we are proud to stock include the used Skoda Octavia, which represents great value for money, the Citroen Grand C4 Picasso, which is a tax free and spacious seven-seater, and the used Ford Fiesta – the UK's best-selling car and almost unbelievably economical in diesel form, sitting well under the tax threshold and returning up to 88mpg.
