Versatile, sturdy, reliable and capable, the Mitsubishi L200 pick-up has enjoyed huge success in the UK, making the top three biggest-selling pick-ups every year since 2016. It combines practicality, rugged looks and great build quality with comfort and a drive that's surprisingly car-like – this is a truck that can tackle any terrain, but which always makes that a pleasure.
Now in its 40th year, the L200 entered its fifth generation in 2015, getting its most efficient and powerful engine ever. Since then it's won a clutch of awards, including the Auto Express pick-up of the year award in 2018 and 2017, Car Buyer's best pick-up truck award in 2019 and 2017, and What Van's light commercial vehicle of the year and pick-up of the year awards in 2016. It's due another revamp in summer 2019, when it will get new styling and improvements to its four-wheel drive system, safety and driver assistance features.
There are 13 versions of the L200, with the options of a two-seater single cab, four-seater club cab and five-seater double cab. All versions have four-wheel drive – which can be switched to two-wheel drive to save fuel – and are powered by a four-cylinder 2.4-litre turbodiesel engine. In the 4Life entry level trim, this delivers 152bhp, 280lb ft of torque, and a top speed of 105mph; in Titan, Warrior and Barbarian models this goes up to 179bhp and 317lb ft of torque, and acceleration from 0 to 62mph takes just 10.4 seconds. All versions can tow up to 3,500kg, with a payload of 1,120kg (except in the single cab version, where it's 1,135kg). On the road, the L200 is steady, with little body roll, strong, precise steering, good grip and easy-to-use controls.
The L200 is packed with safety features, such as Trailer Stability Assist, which adjusts the engine and braking to keep your trailer steady. There’s also an emergency stop signal system, which flashes the hazard warning lights if you brake suddenly to alert the driver behind. Other measure include Hill Start Assist, front airbags and ABS with electronic brake-force distribution and brake assist.
Standard kit is super-generous too: in the single cab you get air conditioning, a two-speaker radio and CD player with Bluetooth, USB and music streaming and stop-start engine technology – and that’s just for starters. The club cab adds alloy wheels, a leather steering wheel and two extra speakers, while the double cab gets cruise control with a speed limiter, electric mirrors and adjustable headrests in the back as well as the front.
