Size does matter – and the Seat Alhambra is proof. It's quite simply huge – and hard to beat not just for sheer space, but for practicality and versatility too. It's also well made, economical to run and enjoyable to drive. Autotrader called it “all the MPV that any family will ever need – one of the finest money can buy.”
If the Alhambra was any bigger inside, you'd start to feel agoraphobic. The car can accommodate seven adults comfortably, with three middle seats that all slide, recline and fold individually, and a third row of seats that's easy to clamber into. Sliding rear doors make it easy to get in and out, too. The boot is massive even with all the seats in place; fold one or both passenger rows down and you'll think you're driving a van.
The Alhambra offers a comfortable, smooth and, for its size, impressively responsive ride, with good grip and steering, suspension that absorbs the road's niggles well, and little noise. The latest generation offers a choice of a 1.4-litre four-cylinder petrol engine and a 2.0-litre four-cylinder diesel, both with 148bhp (there's also a 175bhp version of the latter). The diesel has significantly more torque – 251lb ft versus 184lb ft – so is better placed to transport heavy loads, but the petrol is quicker off the mark, getting from 0 to 62mph in 9.9 seconds. Both have top speeds of 124mph, and fuel economy is up to 55mpg. The cabin feels good quality, with excellent visibility, and sensibly laid out controls which feel durable.
The Alhambra achieved the full five-star rating in Euro NCAP crash tests, and safety equipment is the same across the board: all versions get stability control, tyre pressure monitoring, tiredness recognition and brakes which lock after a crash to prevent further collisions. There are also seven airbags.
Other kit is generous too: all versions come with alloy wheels, front and rear parking sensors, climate control and a touch-screen infotainment system with Bluetooth. SE trim adds automatic headlights and wipers, cruise control and chrome roof rails; go up to SE L for an electric tailgate and rear doors, heated front seats and an upgraded infotainment system with satellite navigation.
