Best used four-wheel-drive cars

4 of the best four wheel drive

If you regularly drive on rough country lanes, bumpy off-road tracks or fields, a 4x4 will definitely make your life easier. They’re also useful on ordinary roads in bad weather thanks to their extra traction, which means they grip the surface better and are less likely to skid. Here are four of our four-wheel-drive favourites…

Vauxhall Mokka 4WD

This popular crossover comes in two-wheel and four-wheel-drive guises, and though it isn’t the most hardy adventurer on this list, it’s sturdily built and strong on practicality and safety, with six airbags, ABS, electronic stability control, emergency braking assistance and tyre pressure monitoring all as standard. To that you can add muscular good looks, a choice of powerful petrol and diesel engines and excellent standard equipment – including roof rails, Bluetooth, dual-zone climate control, alloy wheels, a seven-inch touchscreen and skid plates (which protect the underside). Higher-spec models get satellite navigation and leather seats.

Ford Kuga

Style and practicality combine in this smart, spacious, deservedly popular mid-sized SUV, which was the UK's ninth bestselling car last year. It comfortably seats five, plus there’s plenty of storage, including cupholders and a generous glovebox, and a sizeable boot. As you’d expect from a Ford, the Kuga is fun to drive – quiet, relaxing and well controlled, with the agility of a much smaller car and a choice of punchy, efficient petrol and diesel engines. Although not all versions are four-wheel drive, it handles tricky terrain well and is a strong all-rounder.

Range Rover Sport

Slightly smaller than a full-size Range Rover, the Sport luxury SUV is hard to beat in its class for off-road capability. Lithe, athletic and elegant, it’s both practical and powerful, with four-wheel-drive across the range and a choice of hefty petrol and diesel engines, plus a hybrid, all twinned with an eight-speed automatic gearbox. By hefty, we mean that the smallest engine is 3.0 litres, and the range-topper is a 5.0-litre V8 petrol with 503bhp and 461lb ft of torque. Off-road, the Sport is rugged and brisk; yet on the tarmac it’s refined, smooth, composed and comfortable to drive – surprisingly like a large saloon.

Honda CR-V

The CR-V is one of the world’s bestselling SUVs, and with good reason; this medium-sized crossover is hugely practical, with a vast boot, plenty of safety features and the excellent build quality you'd expect from a Japanese car. Both five and seven-seater versions are spacious, with “more room than most are ever likely to need”, as Carbuyer put it. On the road, it’s enjoyable to drive, with sharp steering giving it a sporty feel; both two and four-wheel-drive versions are available. There’s a choice of petrol and petrol hybrid engines, with fuel economy of up to 40.9mpg under new WLTP figures, plus there are diesels available used.
