The UK's fourth bestselling car in 2018, the Nissan Qashqai is a vehicle with an enormous amount of character. The first ever crossover city SUV, it was Nissan's fastest-selling car ever following its launch in 2006, thanks to its commanding looks, good build quality, generous equipment and great drive.
Add to that affordability, efficiency, versatility and reliability (as you'd expect from Nissan), and it's easy to see why it has consistently won awards throughout its lifetime, including Auto Express' best used mid-size SUV and What Car's best used small SUV in 2018. The same year, it was even named Auto Express' car of the past 30 years because of its pioneering impact on the automotive market.
But awards are all very well: what's the Qashqai like to live with? The AA described it as “a solid family hatchback which manages to be fun, consistent and practical.” It's roomy and comfortable inside, with a luxurious, well finished cabin, a high driving position and a 430-litre boot. For large families, there's the Qashqai +2 seven-seater – if you're not using the two extra back seats, they fold down to provide extra luggage space.
On the road, the Qashqai is refined, with impressive aerodynamics and a ride that’s reassuringly smooth. The supple suspension means it glides over uneven roads with ease, while clever engineering allows it to retain poise when cornering. There are several engines on offer, including 1.6-litre and 2.0-litre petrols and 1.5-litre, 1.6-litre and 2.0-litre diesels; the most frugal option, the 1.6-litre diesel, should deliver between 50mpg and 60mpg. Four-wheel-drive versions are available too.
The Qashqai has always been strong on safety – the year after launch it was awarded the highest ever safety score for adult occupants by Euro NCAP, as well as a very high score for children. All our used Qashqais come with ABS with electronic brakeforce distribution, brake assist and electronic stability control; driver, passenger, side and curtain airbags; height-adjustable front seatbelts with pretensioners; and an electronic handbrake.
There's also Nissan's chassis control system, which controls the engine and brakes to help you on uneven surfaces and in corners, tyre pressure monitoring and a puncture repair kit. In the back there are child locks, ISOFIX child seat points and three three-point seatbelts.
